5 Signs You Are Overworked

Here are some warning symptoms of burnout and how you can handle the situation!

In a fast-paced and vibrant society like Singapore, it’s no surprise that most of us are busy multi-taskers. Recognising signs that you’re stretched too thin can help you get back on your feet in time to prevent that dreaded burnout.

Here are some warning signs that you’ve got too much on your plate, and what you can do to slow down and get back to a pace your body can better handle.

1. Your mind just won’t shut down

You’re obviously tired, but when the lights go out, all you can do is lie in bed, mentally going through all the tasks you’ve left undone. Worse, the more you worry about not getting enough sleep the next day, the more awake you feel – and before you know it, the sun has risen but you haven’t slept a wink.

Set aside all work at least 30 minutes before bedtime to indulge in your favourite relaxing activity, such as sipping a cup of soothing chamomile tea, reading a book or taking a warm bath. You can also set your mind at ease by writing up a to-do list for the next day, so you can rest well knowing you won’t leave anything out in the morning.

2. Your short-term memory sucks

You can’t remember where you placed your keys, and when you last had a conversation with someone, you can barely recall what you spoke about. If these little memory loss incidents are happening more frequently than normal, this could be a sign that you’ve FATIGUED YOUR BRAIN so much that your short-term memory storage gets affected.

Besides putting everything down in a calendar, boost your brain’s capacity and enhance your mental performance by taking SHARRETS DAILY

3. Coffee doesn’t work anymore

Many people rely on a cup or two of coffee to get through the day, however, if you’re on your fifth cup and you’re still unable to kickstart your system., it could be because you’re so tired that your body has stopped responding to caffeine.

Instead of relying on coffee, try other tricks such as putting on some of your favourite music or taking a short walk to refresh yourself. Reward yourself with at least three short breaks throughout the day, so your brain is able to rest and recharge in between tasks.

4. Exercise makes you exhausted

You usually feel refreshed and energised after a session at the gym or an invigorating run. But when you are overworked and burning out, a tough exercise session could make you even more exhausted instead because your body’s resources have been depleted.

In these cases, pursue more relaxing forms of physical activity such as pilates or yoga, which encourage a deeper mind-body connection, so you can work on calming your mind while working out your body at the same tie.

5. Everything irritates you

Everybody has bad days when things just don’t seem to go your way. But when you are overworked and have insufficient sleep, you may find yourself lashing out at anything and everything under the sun, from a friend’s Facebook post, to someone opening a bag of chips loudly in the next cubicle.

In these situations, rest is the best remedy so get some much needed down time as soon as possible or just go on a much-needed holiday. Hopefully, this will give you some perspective and mental fortitude to get through the busy period in one piece!
